    • In my experience Full synthetic is only for 20-80k. Less than 20k and the oil may get by the rings as they are still seating. Over 80k and and again synthetic starts seeping part the worn rings. Ideally a blend has worked best for me.

  • 1:20-First mistake of many...rating the 'W' in multi-viscosity oils by the false nomenclature "Weight." Popular commoner misconception, but the 'W' actually represents 'Winter'. Weight has nothing to do with motor oil. Can't believe that this would be perpetuated by a big-name car authority in an educational video. Ahh, nevermind. They redeemed themselves at 3:50.

  • The problem with oil monitoring systems is that they don't actually tell you the condition of your oil! They use formulas based on temperature and driving habits to suggest an oil change interval. Question - someone once told me that you shouldn't use synthetic oil during the first 1000 miles on a brand new car (break-in); or the engine will not break in properly. True???

  • In my 85 AMC Cj7, I just had the top end rebuilt on the 258cu 6cyl, it was decked, all new valves, valve guides, lifters, all that was done due to my having a head gasket that was blown in two different places....I've only had the head on the motor for about a month and a half, can I change to synthetic oil, or a blend, or is that not feasible, and what would it do to the motor good or bad? I just put 10W-40 in it when I changed my oil today...

  • I can't remember if I talked to you about Synthetic-blend oil. If I have please give me your opinion of them. I ran a few different lube shops in my life and I have a problem trusting a company that will not tell you what is the ratio of pure synthetic and how much is regular oil so that it can be called a blend. I have asked many oil reps, mechanics, guys at auto zone etc. Never got a answer. So if it is 50% synthetic and 50% regular that would be great. But if it has 1% synthetic and 99% regular oil can it legally be called a blend? let me know, would love to get a real answer.

  • Additives (friction modifiers, detergents, stabilizers, etc) generally get used up/ break down/ leach out, before the actual oil does and they can be as important as the oil itself. change your oil once a year whether you reach the mileage limit or not. Also dirt accumulation is another reason to change your oil before you think it might need it due to accumulated mileage. Don’t be cheap! Use good oil and your car will be happier over the long haul.

  • Oil doesn’t wear out. It becomes contaminated. An oil filter that would filter the oil fine enough to remove all contaminates would also remove additive packages that are in the oil to do things the engine manufacturers want the oil to do in their engines.

  • I have run full synthetic in my engine from day one, and change it at half the manufacturer recommended mileage intervals. Should I still switch to the high mileage version of the oil, when I hit 75000 miles? I assume seals and other components will wear regardless of oil type, but I also assume running full synthetic would would drastically reduce wear of these components. Seems counterintuitive that the standard full synthetic formulation would be different than the high mileage full synthetic formulation, but I guess it makes sense for marketing purposes. Curious about your opinion. Great video as always!

    • My grandfather ran the cracking and product part of an oil refinery. Don't know where he got his info about the 5w30 or 10w40 but here's the real: the first number is the true viscosity of the oil the second is the protection equivalent. During "cracking" polymers, think microscopic ball bearings (not exactly but accurate), are added to give it more lubrication. Thus 10w30 is 10 weight oil with enough polymers added to give same lubrication as 30 weight oil. That's how it works. The W is the oil's true viscosity, don't know where that "winter" stuff came from.
